Signage that Blends with the Landscape
The signs in the Sasagawa settlement were created through collaboration between residents, designers, and Sado City. Development and construction of the signs lasted over two years, intending to “convey the 300 year history of the placer gold mines.” These simple, unadorned signboards mesh closely with the rural landscape of the mines and are loved by local residents. The design of the signboards is also critically acclaimed, with the signs receiving a Good Design Award from the Japan Institute of Design Promotion in 2013. The signboards still welcome visitors to the Sasagawa settlement today.
